PERFECT LIGHTING

Clocking in at 37 million players and still exploding in numbers, the game of pickleball has become all the rage as it seamlessly merges elements of badminton, tennis and its table counterpart. Played with paddles, usually in doubles and a perforated ball, on a playing area that is more compact, requiring players to be closer to the net which is at a height slowly lower than in tennis.

Originally born as a sport in 1965, pickleball has been igniting the interest of athletic, sprightly seniors and the fitness obsessed youth with a fervor over the last few years.

This lower impact alternative to tennis is scaled down with a smaller court size. The growing demand and participation of the game has prompted facilities to add or adapt existing area courts. It is also become a popular installation for residential applications.

PICKLEBALL AT NIGHT

Any sports that are played at night require a high level of illumination both for purposes of the players visual needs but also spectators and broadcasters.

Pickleball is a competitive and relatively fast, multi- directional aerial racket sport. To see the ball itself from all angles, high contrast lighting is required to offset direct glare and shadows from light sources.

LIGHT LEVELS/ILLUMINANCE

Proper illumination levels, mounting heights and correct aiming eliminates these problems thereby providing the best lighting conditions for outdoor nighttime pickleball for and indoor courts.

Our engineers will take calculations and process photometric reports such as these to ensure that the necessary light levels are being met.

GLARE & SHADOWS

Ample light is required to have a safe and enjoyable game. Shadows can be reduced or better yet eliminated with adequate light amounts and position.

Glare, which the perceived brightness being emitted from a light source can be debilitating to players and also to the surrounding community and environment if the fixtures are not properly positioned or mounted.

Because pickle ball courts are smaller there are often many of them packed into one space which creates the need to offset more shadows.

If your budget allows, assigning poles to each court is preferred but fewer can be optimized for extended coverage but will have less light intensity and uniformity.

Poles should be mounted at least 16-20 feet above the court and having a pole on each side will be the best option to eliminate shadows.

For indoor courts lights would be mounted on ceilings and care should be taken to not interfere with existing structures such as audio speakers and HVAC for example.

LIGHTING LAYOUT

Lighting is often the most overlooked feature yet it is so important. Understanding your unique needs will help us determine what type of installation is needed and the best lighting layout.

If this is a first time installation, a retrofit upgrade to LEDs or re-lamping of your existing LEDS we can provide solutions for all the above.

Below are some examples of standard court sizes and possible layouts.

LEDS & CONSIDERATIONS

LEDs offer significant energy savings, on average 50- 80%. They are also low maintenance and offer more integration and control options that will tie into your overall building operations more smoothly.

Outdoor fixtures – Floodlights have a broad beam angle are mounted on tall poles around the perimeter and are ideal for large spaces such as outdoor pickle ball courts.

Indoor pickleball court LED lighting fixtures – High bay or UFO lighting fixture that are ceiling mounted are ideal for interior gymnasiums and sports facilities with high ceilings. The optics and beam spreads are more focused and controllable.

Colour temperatures of 4000K are recommended for residential and 5000K for recreational.
